Jianyang Lake Wetland is an ecological gateway in the southern part of Taizhou. Known for its winding rivers and numerous sandbanks, it was designated as a National Urban Wetland Park by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development in 2009. However, due to development activities in surrounding villages, agricultural production, and industrial operations, the vegetation and wetland system around Jianyang Lake have been affected and degraded.

To address this issue, Huangyan district has undertaken ecological restoration and comprehensive remediation of degraded areas, focusing on improving the environmental quality of the wetland. On September 3, 2024, the ecological restoration project at Jianyang Lake was recognized as one of the first outstanding wetland restoration cases in Zhejiang Province.

In recent years, the protection center has advanced the construction of natural shoreline protection projects. Along the main river channels and around the islands, ecological revetments have been built to reduce the impact of water erosion and enhance the natural stability of the shorelines. In key areas, natural materials such as wooden piles and stones have been used to reinforce the riverbeds, improving flood resistance and ecological compatibility. Additionally, multi-layered vegetation has been planted along the shorelines to enhance ecological stability. Today, the Jianyang Lake Wetland boasts about 15 kilometers of ecological revetments.

In addition to shoreline protection, the district has focused on natural recovery, supplemented by artificial restoration. By considering the living habits of wetland indicator species, primarily herons, efforts such as dredging, backfilling, reconnecting water systems, and restoring wetland vegetation have created suitable nesting areas, abundant food sources, and ample space for waterbirds. The "Waterfowl Habitat" project has restored 157,453 square meters of habitat, significantly expanding the range for birds and improving food and nesting resources.

Ecological restoration is a long-term endeavor that requires continuous improvement and consolidation. Haungyan district has established a comprehensive wetland protection system, defining clear roles and responsibilities for various departments and townships. The Jianyang Lake Urban Wetland Park Protection Center, the District Agricultural and Rural Bureau’s Agricultural Enforcement Team, the District Comprehensive Law Enforcement Team, and Yuanqiao Town have jointly carried out enforcement actions in the lake's watershed, targeting illegal fishing activities that disrupt migratory pathways for fish and other aquatic species. This collaborative effort has greatly enhanced the level of protection for the Jianyang Lake Wetland.

Furthermore, the Jianyang Lake Urban Wetland Park Protection Center is actively promoting the construction of a "smart park" system. By utilizing cameras, drones, and infrared sensors, the center has established a comprehensive monitoring system for water quality and ecological resources. This dynamic assessment system allows for the digitized management of wetland resources, further enhancing protection efforts.
