Huangyan, known as the birthplace of mandarins in China, holds titles such as the "Hometown of Chinese Mandarins," "Hometown of Dongkui Bayberry," and "Hometown of Chinese Loquat." Huangyan’s famed mandarin oranges have a rich history, with cultivation dating back to the Three Kingdoms period. By the Tang Dynasty, they were designated as tribute fruits, and in the Southern Song Dynasty, Zhao Gou praised Huangyan mandarins as "the finest fruits under heaven." Certified with a National Agricultural Product Geographic Indication and recognized by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences as the "World Source of Mandarins," Huangyan has become a center for citrus excellence. The area is home to the first county-level "Huangyan Mandarin" Germplasm Research Center and the Zhe Citrus Germplasm Innovation Base, hosting over 500 varieties across 63,000 mu (approximately 4,200 hectares) of citrus orchards. Huangyan is also a leading district in modern agricultural technology, being the only county in Zhejiang recognized in China’s first batch of National Agricultural Science and Technology Modernization Pilot Counties.
Leading efforts in shared prosperity, Huangyan collaborated with Tsinghua University to establish a shared prosperity county-level standard system. Its "Common Wealth Workshop" has been recognized as a model of shared prosperity in Zhejiang. Additionally, Huangyan is home to the Yongning Happiness Science Museum, the world’s first positive psychology service platform, promoting local initiatives in positive psychology.
Huangyan advances rural revitalization with the Rural Revitalization Academy, created in partnership with Tongji University, and its "Ten Methods for Rural Revitalization" has been featured on CCTV. The district has been selected as a National Ministry-Province Joint Rural Revitalization Demonstration Unit, and its Yutou Beach Village has been celebrated as a beautiful countryside model and case at the inaugural UN-Habitat Assembly. Meanwhile, Wuyantou Village in Ningxi was recognized as one of the seven exemplary cases in the Green Rural Revival Program for beautiful rural development.
With its pristine environment, Huangyan’s eastern region is part of the Wen-Huang Plain, known for the unique landscape of "mountains encircling waters through the city." The western region is almost entirely forested, with average negative ion levels exceeding World Health Organization standards. The Changtan Reservoir, spanning 42 square kilometers with a total capacity of 732 million cubic meters, serves as the primary water source for over three million people in Taizhou and is fondly referred to as Taizhou’s "Backyard Garden." Huangyan was awarded as China’s first Climate-Ecological Zone, and its "Blue Cycle" ocean plastic waste management project received the United Nations’ "Champions of the Earth Award."
