Huangyan is located along the central stretch of Zhejiang's Golden Coastline. Established as Yongning County in the second year of the Shangyuan period of the Tang Dynasty (657 AD), it was renamed Huangyan County in the first year of the Tianshou period under Empress Wu Zetian (690 AD), giving it a history of over 1,300 years. In 1989, it was reclassified from a county to a city, and in 1994, it became a district, now serving as one of the central urban areas and a major land transportation hub of Taizhou.
The total area of Huangyan is 988 square kilometers. It comprises 5 towns, 6 townships, and 8 subdistricts, with a registered population of about 612,000 and a resident population of approximately 712,000. In 2023, Huangyan achieved a regional GDP of RMB 63.77 billion (approximately $8.79 billion) and general public budget revenue of RMB 5.003 billion (approximately $690 million). The per capita disposable income for urban residents was RMB 73,548 (approximately $10,141), and for rural residents, it was RMB 41,299 (approximately $5,693).
Huangyan holds three prestigious titles: "Thousand years ancient capitalg," "China's Mandarin Orange Capital," and "Mold Capital of China."
